Peter K., Korean War Veteran
Former business owner of a promotional agency.
Business was pretty good for fifteen years and then the bottom dropped out with the loss of a major customer and the slow down in the economy. Many customers cut promotional work or began to do their own.
I was 69 years old at the time of the slow-down and then I began to have some serious health problems – cancer. Fortunately Medicare and other insurance paid medical bills but savings and other reserves were used to cover normal expenses. I get well again after prolonged treatment but the therapy made it difficult to go out after new business. It was a couple of years of recovery.
Eventually I was out of savings, living on Social Security benefits and some income from free-lance work. I moved in with my daughter but that was in a small home and I needed to live nearer my office.
Then the great opportunity came to my attention. As a veteran I could move into a beautiful Manufactured Home Community. Even with credit problems and limited income from social security, the Veterans Affordable Housing Program was able to help me. I received $5,000 in down payment assistance and a move-in rent subsidy until I get back on my financial feet.
It is a quiet, gated community with a nice pool, spa and recreation room. I love it here. It’s within my budget. Thank you VAHP for making it possible.
